Pupa Hostel Review: A Hidden Gem in Kotor

I arrived in Kotor with no expectations, but I was immediately captivated by its idyllic setting. A cruise ship docked at the pier hinted at the impending tourist season, and the sight of the old city across the harbour was mesmerizing. Nestled below the castle, Pupa Hostel enjoys a prime location right on the waterfront.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by the energetic and welcoming Nikolina, my host for what I initially thought would be a short stay—but it quickly turned into five days. From the moment you step through the door, she makes you feel at home. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she goes above and beyond to ensure guests have a memorable stay. She knows the city inside out, offering excellent recommendations on where to eat, drink, and explore, both within Kotor and beyond. The volunteers at the hostel reflect her passion, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere where guests truly feel valued.

The communal lounge, located near the entrance, is the heart of the hostel. With a cosy seating area and a small kitchen, it’s the perfect spot for travellers to share stories over coffee. A larger, fully equipped kitchen upstairs caters to those who want to cook their meals. The dorm rooms are air-conditioned with comfortable beds, and each floor has clean toilets and showers. The entire place appears newly renovated, adding to its charm and comfort.

Pupa Hostel holds an 8.9 rating on Booking.com, but in my experience, it deserves much higher. If I had one minor gripe, it would be the self-service bed-making policy. Arriving late at night and having to make up a top bunk in a dark dorm can be a little inconvenient. However, this is a small issue in an otherwise exceptional stay.

I visited during the low season, so my experience may differ from the summer months when the crowds pour in. That said, I highly recommend visiting in spring when the weather is pleasant and the town is not yet overrun with tourists.

If you’re looking for a welcoming, well-located, and comfortable hostel in Kotor, Pupa Hostel is a fantastic choice.
