Staying at Linnéplatsens Hotel/Hostel, Gothenburg, Sweden — My Experience

📝 At a Glance: Linnéplatsens Hostel, Gothenburg

📍 Location: 2.5–3.5 km from Gothenburg Central Station, 50m from tram stop (Linnéplatsen).

💰 Price Range: €25–35 per night in dorms (seasonal); I paid €88 for 3 nights in September.

👥 Best For: Seniors and budget travelers wanting a quiet, well-located base.

👍 Highlights: Easy public transport, clean dorms with privacy curtains, solid kitchen, calm atmosphere.

👎 Drawbacks: Limited reception hours (8–11 am), self-check-in, no free tea/coffee, Wi-Fi is weak in the breakfast room.

♿ Accessibility: Reception on 2nd floor (stairs), otherwise level inside.

Intro

Linnéplatsens Hotel/Hostel makes an excellent base for exploring Gothenburg. Located just steps from a tram and bus stop, it’s easy to get around with a day ticket costing 125 SEK (downloadable via Västtrafik on Google Play). For those who prefer flexibility, electric bikes and scooters from providers like Ryde, Voi, and Lime are on most street corners.

The hostel offers clean shared spaces, but the self-check-in system feels a little unwelcoming. Without a proper reception on arrival, the tone of the stay is more independent than warm.

📍 Location & Getting There

The hostel is around 2.5–3.5 km from Gothenburg Central Station. I walked, but you can hop on tram 1 (stop: Linnéplatsen, 50 metres away) or the 22 bus. Electric scooters are another option if you’re confident on the cobblestones.

The property sits on the second floor and uses an entry code.

Senior Tip: Gothenburg streets are uneven — bring sturdy walking shoes.

👋 First Impressions

Self-check-in means you’ll likely find your own way to the room. Reception hours are limited (8:00–11:00 am), so if you need help outside this time, you’ll need to rely on other guests or plan ahead.

A staffed reception would improve the welcome, especially for seniors who appreciate orientation, house rules, and a friendly face to set the tone.

🛌 Rooms

The hostel offers a mix of private and dorm rooms. I stayed in a 6-bed dorm:

Beds: Comfortable and sturdy bunks, with privacy curtains, lights, outlets, and lockers (bring a padlock).

Space: Dorms feel tight when full, but were manageable during my stay.

Extras: Fresh linen and a towel are provided, and staff kindly honoured my request for a bottom bunk.

👎 A few improvements would help:

Some privacy curtains need repair.

Air conditioning would be welcome in summer.

🍳 Common Spaces & Facilities

Kitchen: Well-equipped with a stove, fridge, microwave, toaster, and utensils.

Dining/Breakfast Area: Spacious lounge plus an outdoor terrace. Great for casual conversation, but not ideal for digital nomads needing quiet workspaces. Breakfast is provided for 125 sec or (€11.31 or NZD22.70)

Bathrooms: Two showers and two toilets per floor (plus a handicap toilet). Generally clean, though it could feel stretched if the hostel is full.

Wi-Fi: Reliable in most areas, but drops out in the breakfast room.

Extras: No free tea/coffee at present, but a simple gesture like this would enhance the communal feel.

💰 Value for Money

I stayed mid-September and paid €88 for three nights in a 6-bed dorm. Prices vary with the season — expect dorm beds from about €25 upwards, higher in summer. Considering the location, facilities, and overall comfort, it’s a fair value outside peak season.

One drawback: when I asked to extend, the reception quoted a premium rate, even though the hostel was nearly empty. Offering a small discount would have made more sense — and would have kept my booking instead of sending me elsewhere.

Accessibility

Reception is on the second floor, with a staircase to climb. This could be a challenge for some seniors, though manageable with lighter luggage. Once inside, the building is mostly level.

⏰ Reception operates only from 8:00–11:00 am, so plan your arrival carefully or confirm your check-in instructions in advance.

🌟 Final Thoughts

Linnéplatsens Hostel is a clean, quiet base for exploring Gothenburg. It’s not a social party hostel — more low-key, with a calm atmosphere depending on guests at the time.

With a few tweaks — free tea/coffee, faster Wi-Fi in the breakfast room, and better maintenance of privacy curtains — it could easily move from good to excellent.

I enjoyed my three-night stay overall, but pricing flexibility could have made the experience even better.
