Hostel Review: Tchaikovsky Hostel

The Tchaikowsky Hostel welcomes travellers looking for a blend of affordability, warmth, and sociable charm. It’s a place where budget-conscious guests can rest, connect, and share experiences in a relaxed, communal setting that reflects the hostel’s vision of authenticity.

Location & Accessibility

If you're arriving from the bus station, the walk offers a pleasant introduction to the city. Follow the harbour until you reach Republic Square, then on the left side turn onto Bana Jelačića Street. From there, continue until you reach Nostrodamus cafe and slide to the right, and you're almost there, and you'll find the hostel on the right at Čajkovskog 4 — about 1.3 km from the bus station. It’s an easy, walkable route, and a good way to get your bearings in the city.

First Impressions & Atmosphere

First impressions matter, especially after a long day of travel. After ten hours on the road, I was just hoping for a smooth check-in and a moment to breathe. Instead, I was greeted by Fabian, whose polite manner and warm openness immediately put me at ease. He took the time to sit down with me, offer suggestions, and simply have a conversation — something small, but deeply appreciated.

The atmosphere at Tchaikowsky is laidback and sociable. Guests are friendly, open, and eager to chat — the kind of crowd that makes hostels such a unique experience. The next morning, I met Mirjana, who manages the hostel with quiet kindness and thoughtfulness. She offered tips on where to eat and explore, and even brought in fresh apples for guests — a small gesture that speaks volumes about the care behind the hostel.

Dorm Rooms

Tchaikowsky Hostel has around 20 beds arranged in different room configurations. The dorms are surprisingly spacious, a real plus in a hostel setting. Each bunk comes with fresh linen, sturdy wooden frames, personal lights, shelves, lockers, mirrors, and well-positioned outlets. There’s even a small workstation for those who need to catch up on work or simply want a quiet spot to write or reflect.

It’s clear that the building was once an apartment, now thoughtfully converted into a hostel. That layout brings a sense of homeliness, though it does mean shared space requires a bit of mutual respect, especially during the night in mixed dorms. But when guests are mindful, it works beautifully.

Common Areas & Amenities

The kitchen is compact but functional, offering complimentary tea and coffee throughout the day. During peak times, when the hostel is full, it can feel a bit tight — especially if multiple guests want to cook at once — but with a bit of patience and timing, it serves its purpose.

There are two primary common areas: a small kitchen lounge with a dining table, sofa, and a balcony that offers a welcome breath of fresh air, complete with two tables and chairs. While space is limited, the vibe remains open and friendly.

The reception area ties everything together, with all rooms extending from this central space. Shared facilities include one shower and two toilets for the mixed dorms, with a separate shower and toilet for female guests. These generally meet demand, though during full occupancy, you might need to wait your turn.

The Wi-Fi was consistent and strong — something digital nomads and casual scrollers alike will appreciate.

Value for Money

I originally booked three nights for €69 (or €23 per night), which felt fair for what was offered. However, when I extended for an extra night, the rate jumped to €30 — a bit of a surprise, especially with the hostel not at full capacity and average rates in the city still hovering around €23. While the overall experience was positive, the pricing adjustment felt a little off in context.

Accessibility Considerations

The hostel is generally accessible for travellers with limited mobility, though those with specific needs should contact the hostel in advance to confirm arrangements.

Final Thoughts

This review reflects my personal experience at Tchaikowsky Hostel. As always, each traveller’s stay is unique. For me, the hostel offered comfort, good conversation, and a sense of care behind the scenes — the kind of things that matter most when you’re on the road.

To the hostel owners and staff: if you happen to come across this review, I invite you to reach out and share your thoughts. My goal isn’t to critique, but to share how I felt during my stay — openly, honestly, and with respect for the work that goes into making a space like this feel like home, even for a short time.
