Staying at Dzien Dobry Hostel, Gdansk — My Experience
Dzien Dobry Hostel (literally “Good Morning” or “Good Day”) is a comfortable, friendly base in Gdansk. Just across the river from Old Town, it offers authenticity, shared spaces, and a welcoming spirit that feels genuine from the moment you walk in.
Location & Getting There
The hostel is approximately a 20-minute walk from Gdańsk Główny train and bus station. Getting there is straightforward once you know the way: cross the main road, slide right, and head toward Mandu Restaurant (if you’re after fresh pierogi, they make them onsite). Continue to the river, and you’re almost there. The doorbell is right out front — just press once, and staff will appear.
Being close to Old Town and the rivers means you’re never far from food. There are plenty of restaurants and a few Żabka convenience stores nearby. Major sites such as the WWII Museum, Solidarity Shipyards, and the Green Gate are all within easy reach. Even Malbork Castle, a must-see, is just a short train ride away.
Tip: The tourist information centre on Długa Street charges 16 PLN for maps — something most cities provide free.
First Impressions
The welcome here really sets the tone. Staff greeted me warmly, explained the layout, and outlined the rules. These small touches make a big difference when settling in.
Rooms
Dzien Dobry offers both private rooms and mixed dorms. Rooms feel more spacious than many hostels, and each guest gets fresh linen, a towel (a real bonus), and a locker with nearby power outlets.
The bunks are sturdy, and the staff kindly gave me a bottom bunk as requested. However, my bunk was low to the ground, and for seniors (especially after hip surgery like myself), climbing in and out can be tricky.
A few upgrades would elevate the experience:
- Privacy curtains
- Individual bedside shelves
- Softer bedside lighting (the current ones are quite bright)
Common Spaces & Facilities
The kitchen is well-equipped with utensils, a fridge, dishwasher, microwave, and toaster. There’s also a large dining area and a TV lounge. Free tea and coffee are available all day, which is a thoughtful touch. (One small request: add a pair of scissors!)
Bathrooms are located on each floor and kept impressively clean, with separate showers and toilets. Wi-Fi is strong most of the time, but can occasionally drop out.
The reception area is spacious with seating and storage, making it easy to socialise or simply relax between outings.
Value for Money
Prices vary with the season. When I visited in late May, rates were pleasantly low, but they rose steeply in the summer months. Dorms generally range from 70 PLN to 120 PLN per night, depending on season and setup.
Considering the location, friendly staff, and good facilities, it remains a very good value — especially if you travel outside peak season.
Accessibility
Reception is on the ground floor, and there’s a lift for the upper floors. This makes it a good choice for seniors or travellers with mobility concerns. Staff were thoughtful and always ensured I had a lower bunk. Just make sure to request this in advance.
Note: Reception closes at 11 pm, so plan your arrival accordingly.
Final Thoughts
Dzien Dobry Hostel has a quiet charm, with warm staff and an atmosphere that makes you feel part of something rather than just passing through. With a few small tweaks — privacy curtains, better lighting, and yes, a pair of scissors in the kitchen — it could go from very good to excellent.
I’ve stayed here twice now, and each time the team has gone out of their way to help me. It’s the kind of place I’d happily return to.
