Day 2: Malacca or Melaka

Weather Update: Sunny intervals with rain in the evening. High of 33°C.

Morning Exploration

Today, I went exploring with a list of historical sights to visit. My host served a sweet black bean dish for breakfast, which I suspect was tea-infused. After breakfast, I took a pleasant stroll along the river, already bustling with tourist boats. My first destination was Red Square, a notable historical area.

Red Square: Historical Sights

Red Square, also known as Dutch Square, is a vibrant area with several historical buildings painted in terracotta red. It includes landmarks like the Stadthuys, Christ Church, and the Queen Victoria Fountain. Wandering around, I couldn’t help but marvel at the colonial architecture and the bustling atmosphere filled with tourists from all over the world.

Afternoon Rest and Night Markets

After an 8 km walk, I returned to my lodging for a couple of hours to rest. Later, I ventured back out to explore the night markets. The night markets were incredibly busy, and I can only imagine how crowded they would be in the summer.

The Night Market Experience

Malacca's night markets are a sensory overload, filled with the hypnotic smells and fragrances of street food. While it's important to be cautious about street food due to varying cooking standards, drinking tap water here is generally safe. I've been using iodine tablets in my drink bottle to be extra cautious.

These markets are a paradise for trinket lovers, offering all sorts of souvenirs. However, I refrained from buying anything to avoid carrying extra weight.

Gravy Baby: An Interesting Experience

I ended up at a place called the Gravy Baby, which instantly reminded me of a Mike Myers movie where he often ended sentences with "baby." I asked the staff about the name, but they didn’t speak much English. Through some research, I found out that "baby gravy" is slang for semen. In everyday conversation, "gravy" generally means something is delicious. After enjoying my time there, I headed back to the hostel, where I had a hot night even with a fan going all night.
