Day 1: Kuala Lumpur

Weather Update: Partly cloudy with sunny intervals. High of 32°C.

The Journey to Kuala Lumpur

The day started a bit rocky. I had ordered a taxi for 8 am, but it never showed up. Thankfully, my host stepped in and arranged a Grab car to the bus station. The ride was nerve-wracking as the driver spent almost the entire trip on his mobile, texting and talking while driving in the centre lane at 100 km/h. I managed to take his photo and keep my ticket and the bus number, considering making a complaint as he put all passengers at risk. Here, using a mobile phone while driving carries a RM1000 fine or 3 months in prison.

Arriving in the City

Upon arrival, the weather was scorching hot and walking around was exhausting. However, I was fortunate to have booked accommodation close to the metro and various facilities. My lodging is on the 26th floor, offering a stunning view of one half of the Petronas Towers, one of the tallest buildings in the world.

Exploring Kuala Lumpur

Street food in Kuala Lumpur is delightfully affordable. I had a meal for RM9, which is about $3.51 NZD. Avoiding the tourist traps for food and drink is key. At local 7/11s, a 440ml can of Tiger beer costs RM15, roughly $5.85 NZD, much cheaper than RM42.71 or $14.17 NZD at a bar.

Evening Reflections

Sitting on the balcony on the 26th floor, I was mesmerised by the city’s ornate lighting, streaming into the night sky from every building. I pondered whether to look over the edge or watch Netflix. Netflix won, providing a good way to unwind before settling in for the night.
