Day 15: Exploring My Environment in Cairns

Weather Update: Sunny with a high of 34°C.

Early Morning Heat

After another good night's sleep, I was up before 7:30 am. Heading straight to the balcony, I could already feel the heat, which was in the mid-20s by early morning. Breakfast was the same as yesterday—sausages, bacon, eggs on toast, and coffee.

Morning Adventure

By 9:30 am, I left the hostel and headed to the Central Plaza. I needed a new bag as my old one was broken, and I managed to find a nice canvas bag, albeit on the expensive side. The trek to the Aquarium was quite hot, with temperatures approaching 30°C by 10:30 am. The air-conditioned environment of the Aquarium was a welcome relief.

Marvelling at Marine Life

The diversity of marine life never ceases to amaze me. From tiny fish to monstrous ones, the underwater world is incredibly varied. Even on land, the diversity of life is astonishing. As a creationist, I believe in a higher power that created all things, although I respect other viewpoints, like Ken’s Darwinism. Our conversation on the train reminded me that everyone has their own beliefs, and in the end, we'll all know the truth.

The Aquarium, though not the largest I’ve visited, was a great experience. I’ll upload a short 10-second video to give you a glimpse of what’s there. I should also start setting up photo files and assign them to the respective countries.

Cooling Off at PJ's

After the Aquarium, I stopped at PJ's, an Irish pub, for a pint. Guinness on tap and the old-world atmosphere they've created inside make it a charming spot. I did have some issues downloading my photos and videos, but hopefully, they’ve worked out okay.

Evening Plans

Tonight, I’m heading back to PJ's for quiz night at 9 pm. It’s a bit late, but it’s a good way to engage with the local culture. Cairns is clearly a backpacker town, full of 18-25 year-olds, with plenty of places to drink and eat, mostly influenced by Asian cuisine.

Observations on Cairns

The homeless population here seems to be mostly Aborigines, with only a few others. They tend to move around, as I've seen the same group in various places around the city. The lifestyle here revolves around pubs, pokies, and food. Surprisingly, there aren't many push bikes, electric bikes, e-scooters, or skateboards, which you'd expect in a city teeming with young people.

Blog Stats

I checked my blog stats today and found I’m getting 40-50 hits per post. I’d love to see that number grow into the thousands. If you know someone interested, please encourage them to sign up!
