Day 14: Acclimatising to the Heat in Cairns
Weather Update: Precipitation 15%, Humidity 62%, Wind 18 km/h, High of 31°C.
Morning Routine
I slept relatively well last night but woke up with some aches and pains, so I took some Ibuprofen to ease the discomfort. Breakfast was hearty—three sausages, two rashers of bacon, and two eggs on toast. The hostel I'm staying at is top-notch, with great facilities and a big balcony overlooking the street where you can enjoy your meals in the shade but still in the open air.
Exploring Cairns
Cairns is impressively clean, with no rubbish even in the garden areas. The streets are wide and there are plenty of shopping opportunities. Many hostel dwellers here are looking for job opportunities to supplement their stay in Australia. Most of them have a year's work visa but can only work a maximum of 20 hours a week. Hostel work or a couple of nights behind a bar provide enough money to travel to another area and continue their overseas experience.
Catching Up on the Blog
I spent the morning catching up on my travel blog because the train lacked WiFi, which, in this day and age, should be standard. I needed some photocopying done, so I ventured out into the extremely hot and humid weather. My shirt quickly began to stick to my back, so I called into PJ's to cool off with a beer.
Getting Around
The trek to the shop was just under a kilometre, and I was eager to get into the shade upon arrival. I managed to get the photocopying done and had a brief chat with my son via video messenger. We've been missing each other due to the time difference.
Arthritis Awareness
Just a thought: arthritis affects many children from the age of 15 and numerous adults. If you're fortunate enough not to suffer from this debilitating disease, remember that many around you might be dealing with constant pain. I know what it's like, having suffered from osteoarthritis in both my hips for four years after walking 1500 km in Europe. The diagnosis was a shock, and it drastically changed my life. If you have arthritis or know someone who does, consider donating to research and programs designed to help sufferers. You can find a link on my homepage to donate to arthritis research.
Evening Plans
After running errands, I'm back at the Village Hostel, getting ready to venture out for something to eat and a beverage. The afternoon turned cloudy for a couple of hours, but now the sun is out again for the evening. It's time to enjoy what Cairns has to offer!
