Day 1: Journey to Bangkok
Weather Update: Sunny with a high of 33°C.
Morning Departure
The day began hot, even at 9 am. Thankfully, the air-conditioned stations provided some relief. The train departed on time, and I settled in for the next 5-6 hours of travel to the border.
A Delightful Encounter
During the journey, I struck up a conversation with a local woman named Zahilah Zahid. She lives in Kuala Lumpur but was travelling to Taiping for work and planned to return home in the evening. Zahilah was delightful and humorous. She shared that she had spent five years studying in Cardiff but couldn't wait to leave because of the cold weather. She was shy about being photographed, but I managed to take a discreet photo—sorry, Zahilah!
A Timely Realization
The trip to Padang Besar was uneventful until I realized we were 40 minutes late. My connecting train was set to leave at 5 pm, and it was already 4:50 pm. Clearing customs in such a short time seemed impossible, and I resigned myself to buying another ticket for a later train. Then, a timely realization: Bangkok time is one hour behind. In reality, it was 3:45 pm, not 4:45 pm. I made it just in time.
A Blast from the Past
Boarding the train felt like stepping back into the 1970s. I found my seat, but it was an upper berth, making it difficult for me to get up and down. I asked the conductor if I could move to a lower bunk. He was unyielding, insisting, "No, you sleep there," and banged the top berth for emphasis. His English was non-existent, so I communicated via an app, inquiring about the next stop where I could catch a bus. He replied, "Hat Yai in about an hour," so I decided to get off there.
