🏠 Ad Hoc Hostel – Ljubljana, Slovenia
⭐ Overall Rating: 9.0 / 10
📍 Best For: All mature travellers and solo explorers who value comfort, cleanliness, and a central riverside location.
💶 Price Range: €20–30 per night (paid €26.60 in October)
💬 Highlights: Friendly staff, spotless facilities, strong Wi-Fi, and easy access to Ljubljana’s main attractions.
⚠️ Considerations: No lift, limited kitchen utensils, and few power outlets in dorms.
🌍 Introduction
Ad Hoc Hostel makes an excellent base in Ljubljana, just 1.6 km from the Main Train and Bus Station — an easy, level stroll. The hostel’s location puts many of Ljubljana’s historical landmarks within walking distance, and the nearby river offers easy access to scenic cruises. Electric bikes and scooters (Ryde, Voi, Lime, and Bolt) are readily available for exploring the city.
The atmosphere combines authenticity, shared community spaces, and a laid-back vibe that caters to all types of travellers.
📍 Location & Getting There
🚉 Directions from Ljubljana Bus Terminal:
Walk about 50 metres to the end of the bus station, cross the road, and head down Miklošičeva Cesta. At the end, you’ll see the Triple Bridge — cross over and follow the river for 300–400 metres. The entrance is tucked into the corner with easy access.
🕒 Travel Time: 10–20 minutes, depending on how fast you walk or how easily you get distracted.
💰 Ticket Cost: €0. You could catch a bus, but the walk is flat and pleasant; the bus takes around 11 minutes.
Senior Tip: Ljubljana’s streets are well-paved — bring sturdy walking shoes for cobblestone paths.
👋 First Impressions
The welcome sets the tone here. Staff greet guests warmly, explain the layout and house rules (including quiet hours), and ensure check-in is smooth. During my stay, the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, always ready to assist with directions or local tips. My request for a bottom bunk was honoured — something that’s not always guaranteed in other hostels.
Key-card access is required for entry and for bedrooms and toilets — make sure to carry it at all times (replacement cost €20).
✅ 24-hour reception adds convenience and reassurance.
Guests are required to show photo identification and a credit card upon check-in. Please note that all special requests are subject to availability and may incur additional charges.
Check-in: From 15:00 to 22:00
Check-out: From 00:00 to 10:00
🛌 Rooms
I stayed in a 6-bed dorm. The room was spacious and clean with lockable lockers, bedside lights, and shelving — although at the time of my visit, my shelf had been pulled off the wall. Beds were flimsy in construction and very noisy; when the person above moved, the whole frame creaked and shifted. There were no privacy curtains and limited power outlets in dorms.
I had requested a bottom bunk due to a hip issue, and the hostel kindly accommodated that, but my room was on the fourth floor and accessible only by stairs — there’s no lift.
A few small upgrades could enhance comfort further:
• Individual power outlets
• Air conditioning for the warmer months
• Basic repairs (Room 402)
Fresh linen is provided; towels can be rented for €3.
🍳 Common Spaces & Facilities
The kitchen is poorly equipped for the hostel’s size, with limited utensils, one fridge, a microwave, and a sandwich maker. Coffee options are minimal. There is, however, ample space for conversation and shared experiences. It would be nice to have free instant coffee available — a common practice in most hostels I’ve visited.
The cleaning staff do an excellent job keeping the hostel spotless. Toilets and showers are generally clean, though the shower water flow is regulated and cuts out intermittently.
There’s a separate lounge near reception for digital nomads to work uninterrupted, but again, there aren’t enough power outlets.
Additional improvement suggestions:
• Add a stove
• Extra power outlets
• Instant coffee
• Better utensils
The hostel could also benefit from social activities such as communal dinners, games nights, or small entertainment events to encourage a friendly, inclusive atmosphere for travellers of all ages.
📶 Wi-Fi is strong throughout the building, and the reception area provides maps and sightseeing information.
💰 Value for Money
In mid to late October, I paid €80 for 3 nights (€26.60 per night) — slightly expensive considering the season and location. Prices generally start around €20–30 per night but increase in summer. Overall, Ad Hoc Hostel offers good value as a comfortable and convenient base for exploring Ljubljana.
♿ Accessibility
The reception is located on the ground floor, and stairs lead to the upper levels. There’s no wheelchair access, but the stairs are manageable for most senior or mature travellers.
✅ Reception open 24 hours.
🌟 Final Thoughts
Ad Hoc Hostel is a well-run, welcoming, and sociable place to stay. It strikes a balance between comfort and community, making it ideal for travellers who value both privacy and interaction.
From my time here, it’s hard to find areas to criticise. Looking at the reviews across major platforms, this hostel deserves its 9/10 rating. I would happily stay here again and recommend it to others.
With a few small tweaks — instant coffee, extra power outlets, and an expanded kitchen — plus some organised activities, Ad Hoc Hostel could easily reach near-perfect status.
