Staying at Zinc Old Town Hostel, Tallinn, Estonia β€” My Experience

Intro

This is my honest experience staying at Zinc Old Town Hostel in Tallinn. Yours may differ, but I hope my insights highlight both the strengths and areas that could be improved. Zinc makes an excellent base right in the centre of Tallinn’s Old Town.

πŸ“ Location & Getting There

The hostel is about a 3.5-kilometre walk from the bus station. Being close to Old Town and the river means you’re never far from restaurants, cafes, and local convenience stores. Tallinn’s main landmarks vary between 100 and 800 metres in any direction, making it easy to explore on foot.

Senior Tip: Bring sturdy walking shoes β€” Tallinn’s cobblestone streets can be uneven in places.

πŸ‘‹ First Impressions

The welcome sets the tone. Staff greeting was low-key but efficient. They explained the layout and outlined house rules, including quiet hours (11 pm – 8 am), which ensured restful nights. These small touches made it easy to settle in.

πŸ›Œ Rooms

Zinc Old Town Hostel offers both private rooms and mixed dorms. Rooms are spacious, with each guest receiving fresh linen, a towel (a real bonus), a locker, and power outlets at each bed. The bunks are sturdy, and the staff kindly gave me a bottom bunk as requested.

However, there were downsides:

The bunks squeaked.

The mattresses in our dorm were substandard, leaving me with a sore back each morning.

A few upgrades would make a big difference:

Privacy curtains

Better mattresses

Air conditioning for hot summer nights

🍳 Common Spaces & Facilities

The kitchen is spacious, with plenty of seating, and very well-equipped with multiple utensils, a stove, fridge, microwave, toaster, and even some food staples that other hostels lack.

For digital nomads, there are no real quiet workspaces with privacy, which is something many modern hostels now provide.

Other facilities include:

A TV in the kitchen (increasingly standard in hostels)

Free tea and coffee all day β€” a thoughtful touch

Bathrooms on every level, kept relatively clean, with separate showers and toilets

Strong Wi-Fi most of the time, though it can drop out occasionally

Laundry service for €4

πŸ’° Value for Money

Prices vary with the season. In early September, I paid €57 for three nights (€19 per night in a 6-bed dorm). This is on the higher side for Tallinn, but the central location near the Town Hall made it reasonable.

Be aware: it can get very noisy outside, especially on weekends. Staff were friendly but not particularly engaging β€” an area that could be improved, especially considering feedback from past guests.

β™Ώ Accessibility

Reception is on the second floor, with entry via a ground-floor code provided upon arrival. It would make sense for staff to send this code in advance, either with the booking confirmation or on the day of arrival.

Reception closes at 11 pm, so plan accordingly.

On the positive side, the staff were thoughtful enough to give me a lower bunk as requested.

🌟 Final Thoughts

Zinc Hostel runs smoothly and has no major issues, but it feels underwhelming. There is little atmosphere, no communal lounge, and the kitchen doubles as the only social space. Dorm rooms are for sleeping, not socialising.

With a few small tweaks β€” better mattresses, privacy curtains, a proper lounge, and less cluttered dorms β€” Zinc could transform from good to excellent.

I stayed for three nights. For a short stay, it works well. Would I come back? No. I prefer a hostel that breathes life β€” a place with energy, stories, and atmosphere.

🎯 Who This Hostel is Best For

Short-term visitors who want a clean, central, and affordable base in Tallinn.

Travellers who value location over atmosphere β€” everything in Old Town is within walking distance.

Seniors or mature travellers who prefer quiet evenings rather than late-night socialising.

This hostel is less suited for social travellers or digital nomads looking for community spaces and work-friendly areas.
