April 14th, 2026 — An Unexpected Pause in the Journey

When the Road Suddenly Stops

This is not the update I had planned to write.

My umbilical surgery is now scheduled for May 13th—something I had already begun preparing for. But life, as travel so often teaches us, doesn’t always follow the itinerary.

While at home, doing something as simple as making the bed, I stretched a little too far… and injured my back.

Since then, I’ve been on crutches. Six months.

For someone who has travelled just under 60,000 kilometres across 41 countries, the contrast is hard to ignore. Not long ago, I was navigating airports, crossing borders, and waking up in unfamiliar cities. Now, even the simplest movements require thought, patience, and care.

At times, I’ll be honest—it’s been incredibly frustrating. There are moments where I feel like I’ve gone from traveller to observer, watching the world move while I stand still.

But journeys aren’t always measured in kilometres.

Sometimes, they’re measured in resilience.

Recovery, Reflection, and Regaining Strength

Right now, the focus is simple: recover, rebuild, and move forward.

I’m working on strengthening my back and will soon be seeing a spinal surgeon. Hopefully, that will bring clarity—and a path back to the road I know so well. As always, I’ll keep you updated as things unfold.

This pause has forced a different kind of discipline. Slower days. More reflection. Learning to accept limitations while quietly working to overcome them.

It’s not the adventure I would have chosen—but it is the one in front of me.

The Adventures I Miss

What I’ve felt most during this time isn’t just the lack of movement—it’s the absence of connection.

I miss the conversations with strangers who quickly become friends.

I miss the shared meals, the unexpected detours, the stories that unfold without planning.

And I miss sharing those moments with you.

Because that’s always been part of this journey—not just where I go, but who comes along with me through these words.

A Change in Direction

Before all of this, my plans were taking me through the Middle East.

Looking at things now, I can’t help but reflect—had I continued, would I have found myself stuck there in this condition?

It’s a strange thought, but perhaps this pause, as frustrating as it is, carries a certain sense of timing… even protection.

So now, the route changes.

Instead of the original path, I’ll be looking at a new journey—across the top of Africa to Morocco, then continuing north, all the way to Norway.

Different roads. Different stories.

And something new to look forward to.

Travel Pause Reflection

Travel teaches you how to keep moving—but moments like this teach you how to stop.

To sit with where you are.

To appreciate progress, no matter how small.

To understand that even when the journey pauses, the story doesn’t.

If anything, this chapter is a reminder that travel isn’t just about distance—it’s about perspective.

And sometimes, the most important journeys happen when you’re standing still.

What’s Next

May 13th: Umbilical surgery scheduled

Upcoming: Consultation with spinal surgeon

Current focus: Strengthening and recovery

Future plans: Rerouting the journey—Africa to Morocco, then onward to Norway

The path may have changed—but the destination remains open.

Travel Tips — When Your Journey Pauses

Not every travel lesson comes from movement. Here are a few things this experience has reinforced:

Always listen to your body — small warnings matter

Build flexibility into your plans — routes can change unexpectedly

Travel insurance is essential — especially for long-term journeys

Stay mentally connected — even when physically grounded

Have a “Plan B” (and C) — sometimes the detour becomes the story

Final Thoughts

To those of you still following along—thank you.

I haven’t forgotten you. In fact, I miss you.

Wherever you are in the world, know that I’m thinking of you. And I look forward to the day I can once again share the road, the stories, and the unexpected moments that make this journey what it is.

Until then… this is just a chapter, not the whole story.
