Day 8: Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium

Weather Update: Sunny periods. High of 31°C

Relaxing Days

I'm nearing the end of my stay in Cambodia, just winding down until Sunday. I could stay here, get a nice all-over tan, sit in a chair with a cold beer, and watch the world pass by on either side of the street. Today, I called into a bar along Pub Street, ordered a beer, and relaxed while watching the cricket.

Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium

I spent my time at Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium earlier in the day which is great value for money. There's a free bus that takes you there, about an hour away from the Heritage Walk, which isn't particularly remarkable.

Unique Experience

Visiting the Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium offers a distinctive experience compared to the usual temple visits and crowded exhibitions. The facility in Siem Reap town and province features an exhibition of freshwater fish, animal parks, and a reptile enclosure. The aquarium is located in Sotr Nikum district’s Khchas commune, about 30 km from the provincial town. It's surprising to see such a diverse range of freshwater fish species, primarily from the Mekong River, considering the brown, muddy waters of Phnom Penh.

Bon Om Touk Festival

Last year's festival was held here in Siem Reap. The three-day festival includes a Royal Boat Race on the first day, a "Bondet Bratib" ceremony with large lantern releases and fireworks, and Og Ambok on the second day, involving a lantern-lighting ceremony and prayers to Preah Purthisat. The goals of the Siem Reap River Festival include preserving the lake and rivers, encouraging public participation, and fostering a communal understanding of the significance of the waterways.

Cultural Significance

The Bon Om Touk festival is at the heart of Cambodian culture, celebrating the beauty, significance, and vitality of the country's waterways. It's not just a celebration but a mission to promote river conservation, cultural heritage, and community involvement.

Cultural Performances: Experience traditional Cambodian dance, music, and arts, showcasing the rich tapestry of Khmer culture.

Boat Races: Cheer on the thrilling boat races, a highlight of the festival, symbolizing strength, teamwork, and tradition.

Environmental Workshops: Participate in workshops and seminars focused on river conservation and sustainable practices.

Surroundings

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Siem Reap's river, this festival is a perfect blend of fun, education, and cultural immersion. Whether you're drawn by adventure, a love of nature, or a passion for culture, the River Festival in Siem Reap promises an unforgettable experience.
