Day 6: A Rocky Start – Part 1

Weather Update: Rain, High: 6°C

Elevation Above Sea Level: 39 Metres

Early Morning Setback

The alarm went off at 5 a.m., and by 5:30, I was in the hotel lobby, ready for my ride to the airport. The rain, still lingering from the day before, gave the morning an extra touch of dreariness. I was hopeful for a smooth start to my journey—but that quickly changed.

The Delayed Flight

Upon arriving at the airport, I checked my phone, and there it was: a message notifying me that my flight had been delayed by almost two hours. Originally set for 8:10 a.m., it was now pushed back to 10:25 a.m. It seemed like just the kind of morning I’d been trying to avoid.

Waiting at the Gate

I gazed out of the airport window as the plane from Istanbul finally touched down. European airports typically have quick turnarounds—around 40 minutes to offload passengers and baggage. So, I figured there was still hope that we wouldn’t fall too far behind. But as the plane landed, things weren’t looking promising.

By 9:40 a.m., passengers started to head to the gate. I followed suit, expecting to board soon—but instead, I saw the dreaded message on the screen: “Please wait in the lounge.”

The Check-In Struggle

I’d checked in online the day before, thinking it would save me time. But when I tried to use my digital boarding pass, I was told it wouldn’t work. So, off I went to the check-in counter to get a physical pass. Another 10 minutes down the drain. But it didn’t end there I was also pulled aside at security for a bag search.

The Missed Flight

As I made my way through customs, I heard an announcement calling my name. My flight was still 30 minutes away from departure, so I thought I had plenty of time. But when I reached the gate, it was a different story. The plane was already sitting there, the bridge still attached, but I had no access. I watched helplessly as the plane took off at 10:57 a.m., even though I had been at the airport since 5:45 a.m.

The Airline’s Attitude

The staff didn’t seem to care much about my situation. Their response? “You were late, and you missed your flight. It’s your fault.” But here’s the thing: I didn’t miss my flight. My flight missed me. The plane had come in empty, and the boarding process had been rushed. No announcements, no guidance—just confusion.

A Lesson Learned

I’d booked a special seat in 1A, knowing that sitting in cramped spaces makes my hip pain unbearable. But the real lesson here? Always go through customs as soon as you arrive, even if your flight’s delayed. I lost hours today, and now I’ll be arriving in Istanbul six hours later than planned.

The Long Journey Ahead

With the delay, I’ll now be facing a tight schedule. My accommodation is 3 hours away from the airport, and the train ride alone takes 1 hour and 26 minutes. Add to that the metro, bus, and walking, and I won’t be arriving until well after midday. If I had landed on time, I’d have had plenty of time to figure out the route to my hostel.

In the end, I had to buy a new ticket that cost twice as much as my original one. And the seat? It’s going to be cramped. It’s frustrating because I put in the effort to make the right choices and plan, but sometimes, it feels like everything can fall apart in a second.

Wrapping Up

Despite the setbacks, I’ve learned a lot about travel—and about how even the smallest details can throw off your plans. But I’ve also met some amazing people along the way, all sharing their own unique experiences. This has been one long day, and there’s more to come. Stay tuned for Part 2!
