Day 6: All in a Day's Work
Weather Update: Sunny with a high of 31°C
Morning Start at Queens Town Hostel
Yesterday, I met Maddy, a 27-year-old from Sydney. We chatted at a local restaurant, discussing various topics that solo travellers usually cover when they meet for the first time. When I requested the bill, I noticed a discrepancy. I believed I had given them $20 instead of $10.
The Intimidation Incident
The staff called the owner, who arrived with a man I now refer to as "Man Mountain"—a 6ft. 4in brute who tried to intimidate me by standing with his arms crossed, glaring at me. I asked the owner if this imposing figure was there to intimidate me or if he planned to beat me up once I was outside. The owner denied it, saying Man Mountain was just along for the ride. I couldn't help but laugh at that.
The Confrontation
I engaged in a conversation with the owner, who was concerned about a potential bad review, which I assured him would happen. Man Mountain continued to stare, making his intentions clear. I pointed a finger at him, contemplating taking a photo and sharing it, but Maddy advised against it. She was right—it wasn't worth the hassle. The core issue was that the staff had lied to the owner, and witnesses confirmed my story.
Unexpected Reunion
Maddy and I said goodbye, thinking we would never see each other again. But later that evening, while I was having a beer by the pool, she walked in. It turns out we are staying at the same place—fate has a funny way of working out.
Afternoon Plans Today
The heat here is intense, and locals wisely seek shade wherever they can find it. It seems only tourists brave (or foolish) enough to wander around outside in the midday sun. As the saying goes, "Mad Dogs and Englishmen sit out in the midday sun." I was all set for an afternoon trip to The Wildlife Park and Aquarium, but before the bus left, I stepped inside the Heritage Walk to escape the heat. Consequently, I missed my bus. The Heritage Walk is still a project in progress with no clear indication of its future look. For now, it seems poised to become an upmarket mall.
Evening Conversations
Last night, Maddy from Sydney a real party girl and an Englishman from Abergavenny now living in Newquay called Joe, and we settled in for a chat. Conversations among travellers are often far more interesting than the usual small talk about the weather. I had a Long Island Iced Tea, hoping it would help me sleep, but it didn't have the desired effect. Towards the end of the evening, we were served a bar snack of deep-fried grasshoppers.
Sublime Eating Experience: Entomophagy
My initiation into entomophagy—the eating of insects—was a step away from the culinary habits of a lifetime. For Europeans and most Westerners, the idea of eating insects is far removed from traditional cuisine. I was raised on Cornflakes and Porridge so the concept of eating insects was quite alien to me.
Cultural Context
In many parts of Asia and Southeast Asia, the consumption of insects is a sustainable and straightforward superfood. Farmers in Cambodia and across the region use nets to catch grasshoppers in rice fields. These insects feed on plants and foliage, absorbing much of what they eat, resulting in a tasty and fresh product. Grasshoppers fry up well, offering a satisfying crunchy texture. They are often sold in cups or bags of up to a dozen.
Historical Significance
Locusts, a prevalent source of protein, are mentioned in the Bible and the Old Testament due to their abundance. They were—and still are—a common edible crop pest in many parts of the world. Across Southeast Asia, they remain one of the most popular and cheapest street snacks.
