Harbour Bridge / Opera House

Day 5: Exploring Sydney: [Walking 11.78Km]

Weather Update: Mostly cloudy with sunny spells, high of 24°C.

Up and at it by 6 am, I kicked off what promised to be an exciting day. The morning greeted me with sunshine, but by 10 am, the skies turned overcast. Ready for my 3km hike, I set out to explore the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, China Town, and Redfern Street Party.

Walking through the CBD isn't my cup of tea—skyscrapers stretching towards the sky and living on the 40th floor may offer spectacular views, but it's quite a shift. The constant gusty breeze in the CBD was a blessing, though, as it shielded me from the sun. But step outside the shadows and—bam! —you’re hit by the wind.

I made a pit stop 100 meters from the bridge when I saw a pint of Young Henrys (Newtowner) on special for $8.50 instead of $12.50—an absolute no-brainer.

Lunch plans had me heading to Chinatown by 2 pm. The overcast weather gave the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House a somewhat dull appearance. But come 3 pm, the sun burst through, heating up the afternoon as I continued my exploration.

The Princess of the Seas docked nearby, was an immense sight—an engineering marvel for cruise lovers. The Opera House was teeming with thousands of people (note to self: avoid weekends).

After the Opera House, I caught a train to Chinatown, where I savoured a fabulous Pad Thai. Unfortunately, my choice of house red wine backfired—the bill was a staggering $19.50 for the wine and $17.50 for the meal. Lesson learned: always check the wine list!

Next, I ventured to Redfern Street, which was buzzing with a cultural event showcasing local cuisine and entertainment. It was okay, though not something I'd rush to do again.

The day wrapped up at the Woolpack pub, where I caught the Mike Tyson fight and met an eccentric young lady named Georgia. She was an open book, sharing her dreams of living the high life, uninterested in marriage or kids. Her spirit was intriguing, and while our conversation was lively, it made for a memorable end to the day.

Surprisingly, I managed to book an extra night here, despite the 18-35 age criteria. I might be over 70, but I fit right in—or so I like to think! Now, I’m settled in with a glass of red wine, ready to watch a Netflix movie before bed.

Hope everyone’s enjoying these updates as much as I am reliving them. Until next time!
