Plovdiv Through My Eyes:

A Senior's Slow-Paced Journey Through Bulgaria's Ancient Heart

Hello everyone! I'm back to share another chapter from my ongoing journey around the world, and this time, I'm writing to you from the charming city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. As many of you know, I'm not just ticking off destinations on a map; I'm seeking out experiences that resonate with a slower pace, a deeper appreciation for culture, and a genuine connection with the places I visit. Plovdiv, with its ancient roots and relaxed atmosphere, has proven to be a perfect fit.

Day 4: Embracing a Slower Start

This morning, I woke up with a familiar ache in my back – a gentle reminder that age is just a number, but sometimes, numbers make themselves known! I took it as a sign to embrace a slower start to the day. After a simple breakfast, I dedicated my morning to finishing up a hostel review. I always strive to provide honest and balanced feedback, focusing on the overall experience rather than getting caught up in minor details.

A Return to the Djumaya Mosque

Later in the day, I revisited the Djumaya Mosque, hoping to capture some interior shots that I missed on my previous visit due to prayer services. I was immediately struck by the intricate mural patterns adorning the walls and domes. The artistry and dedication that went into creating these masterpieces were truly awe-inspiring. I also appreciated the mosque's welcoming attitude towards photography, with a simple donation being the only requirement. It's a refreshing contrast to some churches in Western culture, where photography is often restricted or comes with a hefty fee.

Travel Plans and Serendipitous Encounters

As my time in Plovdiv draws to a close, I've been busy making arrangements for my next destination: Bucharest, Romania. I've booked a late-night bus that will take me there overnight. I also had an interesting encounter with an Australian solo traveler who is hitchhiking through the Balkans. It's an idea that has piqued my interest, and I may consider it for a future adventure.

Marmalad Bar

In the afternoon, I found myself at the Marmalad Bar in the city centre. It was a quiet day, but the promise of karaoke later in the evening added a touch of excitement to the atmosphere. I had a wonderful conversation with Krasi, my host at the bar, who is preparing to walk the Portuguese Camino. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and it reminded me of my own Camino experience. I also had the pleasure of meeting Stivian, a student with a passion for English and history. His knowledge of Bulgarian culture and landmarks was impressive, and his dreams of exploring the Nordic countries were inspiring.

A Stroll Through Old Plovdiv

As the day drew to a close, I took a stroll through the cobbled streets of Old Plovdiv. The ancient houses, some dating back over 160 years, stood proudly alongside remnants of Thracian settlements that are nearly 4,000 years old. It was a truly magical experience, and I hope my photos capture the essence of this timeless city.

Plovdiv: A City That Leaves Its Mark

Plovdiv has left an indelible mark on my heart. It's a cosy, charming city with a unique character that I won't soon forget. I'm curious to see how it transforms during the peak summer months when the streets are filled with tourists.

Life After Arthritis: A Personal Mission

On a more personal note, I want to share that my journey is also driven by a deeper mission: to inspire and support people who live with severe arthritis pain. As someone who has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both hips, I know firsthand how debilitating and isolating this condition can be. That's why I'm travelling the world for the next five years – to show that life after arthritis is possible. It's not the end, but a new beginning.

If you're also an arthritis survivor, I invite you to come along for the ride, whether for a day, a week, or a month. Let's share an adventure and inspire each other to live life to the fullest, despite the challenges we face.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. Tomorrow is another day, and I can't wait to see what adventures await.
