Day 4: Kampong Phluk Floating Village
Weather Update: Sunny periods. High of 31°C
Phone Update
After several weeks of frustration, I discovered that my phone sim card was damaged in Kuala Lumpur when someone from a recognized source tried to change it. Samsung has instructed me to get a service center engineer to check my phone. I initially thought my service provider was blocking my cellphone, as they indicated in correspondence. All network operators can do this if your phone is locked, making it an unusable toy.
Kampong Phluk Floating Village
Kampong Phluk is normally flooded for long parts of the year, but since it is the dry season, the water level is 3 meters lower than usual. I'll post photos to show the contrast between seasons. The atmosphere was peaceful and quiet, away from the bustling tourist crowds. In July, the roads we traveled along would be underwater, and transport would only be by boat. Once the water level drops after the rains, the bottom of the lake becomes the road to the mainland.
Floating Restaurant Experience
We landed at a floating restaurant on the lake. Instead of going out into the middle of the lake with 50-60 other tourist vessels to view the sunset, I asked to stay behind at the restaurant and for the boat to pick me up later. I sat there with a cold beer, soaking up the peaceful surroundings. It was a personal experience, without the excitement of tourists searching for holiday souvenirs.
One other person stayed behind, and we didn't converse until we stood on the dock waiting for the boat. To my surprise, we discovered we lived within several miles of each other in Bristol, England. He was from Filton, where my wife was brought up, and I lived down the road in Patchway. We left Bristol in 1989, and in Jakarta in November 2024, I met a family whose parents lived in Bedminster, where we had a flat. The world is vast, yet our pasts seem to intertwine unexpectedly.
Historical Information
Location and Population
Located in Siem Reap, Cambodia, Kompong Phluk (sometimes spelled Kampong Phluk) is a collection of three floating villages with a total population of 2000-3000 residents. It is near the Tonle Sap Lake, making it a convenient home for fishermen.
Mangrove Forest and Ecosystem
Kompong Phluk has the largest mangrove forest in the region, known as the flooded forest, submerged for part of the year. The area, including the greater Tonle Sap Lake, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve containing unique plant species, fish, and animals, many of which are endangered.
Village History
Before the Khmer Rouge, Kompong Phluk was a collection of fishermen and their families living near the lake. This community existed until the Khmer Rouge arrived in Siem Reap in 1975, burning down floating village homes and moving families to central work sites. After the Khmer Rouge, families returned to the area to resume their lives as fishermen.
Life in the Floating Village
It remains a challenging place to live. Since the 1980s, people have left for the city when they could afford it, due to a lack of essential services and Khmer Rouge remnan Conditions improved in the 1990s when aid organizations started working in the village, building roads, schools, and teaching fishing and conservation.
UNESCO Heritage
Starting in 2000, residents developed an ecotourism site to showcase the village’s unique floating homes, vast mangrove forests, and Tonle Sap Lake. Many residents now earn a living from tourism, with electricity becoming a revolutionary product when the village was connected in 2016. Tourism keeps this community alive, but for future generations and tourists, the impact on these delicate communities remains to be seen.
