Day 3: Braving the Weather in Dili

Weather Update: Rain is forecast for most of the week, Humidity 67%, high of 32°C.

Morning Challenges

We all sat there on Sunday morning, listening to the heavy rain that had poured all night and was still going strong. The garden began to flood, and cockroaches made their unwelcome appearance, prompting an Indonesian girl to scream and jump on her chair until they were sprayed away.

A Brave Attempt to Venture Out

By midmorning, the rain eased up slightly, so I decided to venture out and walk along the coast. However, just five minutes into my walk, I encountered flooded roads that were impassable on foot. Luckily, a local on a motorbike saw my predicament and offered me a ride. It was a bit tricky, but we managed to get to the other side of the flooded area, and I was grateful for his help.

Navigating the Humidity

Continuing my walk, the post-rain humidity was overwhelming, and I was soaked through after just 20 minutes. My plan to visit the visitor centre was foiled as it was closed—of course, it was Sunday. However, I did manage to find a bar that served beer, the first one I'd seen in three days, which was a small victory, in the end, it was a very hot day..

Tuk-Tuk Adventures

Wanting to explore another part of town, I hopped into a tuk-tuk. Unfortunately, the driver took me to the opposite side of town and tried to overcharge me $15. I refused, offering him $0.25 instead, and walked off. Scam averted!

Discovering Local Markets

I walked along the main road, filled with stallholders selling fresh vegetables that looked far superior to what we often get on our shelves back home. After another tuk-tuk ride back to the mall, I had a very late lunch, bought a bottle of red wine, and headed back to the hostel.

Evening Conversations

Hailing a taxi, the driver seemed lost, so I ended up giving him directions to the hostel. Back at the hostel, I spent the evening talking with two remaining Americans from the Peace Corps. We shared wine and talked late into the night about their experiences in Timor-Leste.
