Day 3: Leaving Hanoi
Weather Update: Cloudy (Air Quality Warnings), High 22°C
Elevation: The average elevation of Hanoi, Vietnam is 5–20 meters above sea level. The city's terrain slopes gradually from north to south and west to east, with the highest peak at Ba Vi, which is 1,281 meters above sea level.
Day 3: Hanoi was slow and somewhat frustrating as I prepared to leave the city. With my departure scheduled for 6 pm, I spent the day wandering around, trying to find something to occupy my time. Getting lost several times gave me a taste of the labyrinthine streets that make up this city. Eventually, I found refuge close to my hotel and enjoyed a beer before my journey.
Grab MotorBike:
I had left my gear at the hotel, and upon my return, the proprietor arranged a Grab motorbike for me, assuring me it was cheap. If you ever come to Hanoi, know that while this might seem like a convenient option, it's not the safest—an experience I won't be in a hurry to repeat. However, I was leaving and that was all that mattered.
Sleeper Bus:
The bus ride turned out to be quite the ordeal. Instead of the luxury bus I had booked for the 24-hour journey over the mountains, I found myself on what felt like a delivery truck. The bus was packed with parcels and packages from floor to ceiling, leaving little room for passengers. Sharing the cramped space with a stranger made the conditions even less pleasant. Mobile phones rang incessantly, disturbing any chance of sleep in the already tight bed spaces, barely fit for an adult. By the time I finally managed to doze off, we had reached the mountains at the border.
Border With Laos:
I thought I had meticulously planned all my visas, knowing what was needed for each country. However, I was in for a surprise. While a visa on arrival is available for Laos, at the checkpoint I arrived at, an E-Visa was required. This unexpected twist forced me to return to Hanoi.
Traveling can be full of unexpected challenges, and today was a reminder of the importance of flexibility and patience. Despite the setbacks, I'm looking forward to my next adventure in Laos, hoping for smoother travels ahead.
I hope this makes your blog more engaging! Safe travels and may your journey ahead be smoother! 🌏🚍✈️
