Wednesday: Challenges Ahead in Jakarta
Weather Update: Sunny with cloudy intervals. High of 33°C.
Morning at the Information Centre
The Information Centre is just across the square, but it often looks closed. After peeking through the door and seeing no one, I walked away, only to realize the sign said "open." I went back and found the staff, who were just out of view. Despite the language barrier, they were very helpful, and I got the information I needed.
Planning the Day
My initial plan was to get my ferry ticket to Singapore in the morning and ride the gondola in the afternoon. Unfortunately, my English accent and the language barrier led to some confusion. I realized I need to take screenshots of my destinations to avoid this issue in the future. Despite assurances from locals, I ended up back where I started. From the photos, you can see the level of poverty and the lack of space with people building right to the edge of the railway tracks.
Navigating the Rain
I travelled back to my area in Jakarta just as it started to rain. I headed to the street food market from the previous day before the rain got too heavy. Afterwards, I returned to the Batavia Café, as the hostel is just a place to sleep and lacks social spaces like other hostels. I spent hours trying to purchase my ferry ticket online, only to be denied access because I’m a foreigner.
Train: 30km
Walking: 9.06km
