Day 95: Time to Explore
Weather Update Sunny: High 13°C
Elevation Above Sea Level: 39 Metres
Breakfast Woes and Wanderings
Today, breakfast was included in my room price for three nights. If you were a rabbit, you would have loved it. They put hot food into cold containers, so the scrambled eggs were cold and hard to swallow when I came down at 9 a.m. (after a long day of travel). On the bright side, the olives were delightful. My hotel is located on the far side of the city, which stretches along the coast for miles, making it a bit challenging to get around.
Navigating Trabzon
I spent an hour walking around to familiarize myself with the area in case I got lost, which happens frequently. Before leaving, I asked the reception for some water for my room. It took me three tries over 6 hours, but I finally got some.
Minibus Adventures
One of the perks of Trabzon is the minibuses that travel from all over the city to the centre for just 20 TL (96 cents NZ). They run frequently, and my translator app helps me confirm with the driver if it's the right bus. I caught a minibus outside the hotel and headed straight into the city centre.
The Elusive English Pub
I was drawn to a place called the English Pub, thinking it would be perfect for me. However, it was costly and not worth the effort to get there. It's a life lesson: sometimes what you read isn't what you get.
The Netflix Dilemma
I purchased Netflix in Nepal to wind down at night but discovered it doesn't work in other countries without cancelling my account and reapplying. To avoid this hassle, I might have to get a VPN to set it to the country I purchased Netflix from. This would then trick Netflix that I am in the country I purchased it from. However, some countries, especially Muslim ones like Turkey, restrict content, so I might wait until I reach a more liberal country.
Reflections on the Day
Despite the minor hiccups, today was a day of exploration and learning. Navigating a new city always comes with its challenges, but it’s all part of the adventure. Trabzon continues to offer its charm, and I look forward to uncovering more of its secrets.
