Day 1: Monday - Flight to Bali and Jakarta

Weather Update: Rain is forecast for most of the week, humidity is at 67%, and the temperature will be 32°C.

Flight to Bali

The flight to Bali was smooth, but I felt frustrated upon landing. Despite transitioning to Jakarta, I had to purchase a visa for $55 NZ. Even though I was just walking from the international terminal to the domestic one, I had to leave the airport and come straight back in. This process included going through three sets of customs and using a computer to add our details, even though they already had our information from customs and passport control.

Time in Bali

Unable to check in until an hour before the flight, I found a cozy spot to relax for a few hours. During this time, I managed to book a hostel near the old town in Jakarta. I’ll be staying at the Bobobox Hostel for three nights at $46.66.

Arriving in Jakarta

I arrived in Jakarta early in the evening, and the distance between the international and domestic terminals was significant. Upon leaving the airport, I was immediately bombarded by street hustlers, all vying for my money. Unfortunately, I think I got scammed with my transport to the lodging. I was charged 350,000 IDR (about $37), with the driver receiving only 150,000 IDR while the middleman pocketed 200,000 IDR.

The Scary Drive

The drive into the city was terrifying. The road rules seemed non-existent, and at times, I closed my eyes, hoping we would arrive soon. It was a long journey, but I finally reached my destination.

Settling In

After the roller coaster of a day, from navigating flooded roads in Dili to the wild ride in Jakarta, I was ready for a good night’s sleep. Despite all the travel, I woke up early at 5:30 am, a testament to the joys and trials of travel.
