🏠 Cukrarna Hostel Review

Staying at Cukrarna Hostel, Kranj, Slovenia β€” My Experience

🌍 Introduction

Cukrarna Hostel is a 17th-century renovated house that makes an excellent base in Kranj Old Town, located 1.1 km from the Main Train Station and 500 metres from the Globus Stop. The hostel’s location puts many of Kranj's historical landmarks within walking distance.

The atmosphere combines authenticity, shared community spaces, and a laid-back vibe that caters to all types of travellers. It's a place that feels like home.

πŸ“ Location & Getting There

πŸš‰ Directions from Kranj Train Station:

Outside, walk over the bridge on the left-hand side to the end and cross the road, turning left. Walk to the staircase for the climb up to Old Town, approx. 200-300 metres.  Exit left and take the first right turn until you reach the main square; here, you will find the information centre in front of you. Turn left and walk to the "Well" in the next square. Immediately over your shoulder is a narrow street; follow it for 50-100 metres and it’s on the left-hand side.

πŸ•’ Travel Time: 10 – 20 minutes, depending on how fast you walk or get distracted.

πŸ’° Ticket Cost: 0 You could catch the bus train station, but the walk is easily accessible and the bus takes approximately.

Senior Tip: Kranj streets are well-paved β€” bring sturdy walking shoes for cobblestone streets.

πŸ‘‹ First Impressions

The welcome sets the tone here. Staff greet guests warmly, explain the layout and house rules (including quiet hours), and ensure check-in is smooth. During my stay, the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, always ready to assist with directions or local tips. My request for a bottom bunk was honoured β€” something that’s not always guaranteed in other hostels. Key Pad access for entry and physical keys for bedrooms. Make sure you carry your key with you at all times.

βœ… Reception Hours: 8 -12 am and 3 – 8 pm adds a layer of convenience and reassurance. Guests are required to show a photo identification and a credit card upon check-in. Please note that all Special Requests are subject to availability, and additional charges may apply.

Check-in: From 15:00 to 20:00

Check-out: From 08:00 to 11:00

πŸ›Œ Rooms

I stayed in a 6-bed dorm; the room was spacious and clean with lockable lockers, bedside lights, and plenty of power outlets. Beds are well-made. There were no privacy curtains, but screen panelling adds to privacy. I asked for a bottom bunk because of my hip, and the hostel provided that, but I was on the fourth floor via stairs there is no lift.

Fresh linen is provided; towels can be supplied (Ask at Reception)

A few small upgrades could enhance comfort further:

Tone down the bedside lights (Too Bright)

Privacy Curtains would help with the lighting.

Air conditioning for the warmer months, especially in dorms.

🍳 Common Spaces & Facilities

The kitchen is adequately equipped with the utensils needed for the size of the hostel. There is a fridge, a microwave, and a sandwich maker, a "Basic" table-top stove, no free tea and coffee, but the hostel has its own breakfast bar where you can purchase barista coffee. There is, however, ample space for conversation and shared experiences. It would be nice to have the option of instant coffee available for free, a common practice in the majority of hostels I have visited.

The hostel cleaners do an amazing job each day, keeping the hostel in a clean condition for guests, and in general, the toilets and showers are relatively clean with no real issues. There are limited showers, and when the hostel is busy may be issues with availability.

There is a separate lounge in the reception area for guests and digital nomads to work uninterrupted. There is a lovely outside balcony with views of the mountains, which serves as the smoking area.

Additional improvement suggestions:

Β·      Add a Stove/Oven

Β·      Instant Coffee.

Β·      Better Utensils.

The hostel could create more social activities such as free communal dinners, games nights, and entertainment, encouraging a friendly, inclusive atmosphere for travellers of all ages.

πŸ“Ά Wi-Fi is strong throughout the building, and the reception area offers helpful sightseeing information.

πŸ’° Value for Money

In mid to late October, I paid β‚¬56.10 for 3 nights (€18.70) β€” very affordable considering the location and the time of the year. Prices generally start around β‚¬18-30 per night for a dorm room, but increase in summer. Overall, Cukrarna Hostel offers good value as a comfortable and convenient base for exploring Kranj and the surrounding areas by bus or train.

β™Ώ Accessibility

The reception is located on the ground floor, and stairs lead to the upper floors. No wheelchair access, but the stairs are manageable and the setup for most senior or mature travellers.

βœ… Reception open 8-12 pm and 3-8 pm.

🌟 Final Thoughts

Cukrarna Hostel is a well-run, welcoming, and sociable place to stay. It strikes a balance between comfort and community, making it ideal for travellers who enjoy privacy and interaction.

From my time here, it is hard to find areas to critic hostels, and at the time of writing this review, looking at the reviews across the major platforms, this hostel deserves its 9 grade. I would happily come here and recommend this hostel.

With a few small tweaks β€” Instant Coffee, Proper Stove/Oven (Real Bonus), organised activities β€” it could easily reach near-perfect status.
